Staycation

Or, how we celebrated Memorial Day Weekend 2023.

This year we had family come to town for a little vacation/staycation here in Charleston. My sisters and their significant others came in for the long weekend and we had quite the itinerary planned. Planning started a few months prior, so we could get reservations for old favorites and for new places we had been wanting to try. Goals for the trip were 2 beach days, a haunted pub crawl, and a tiki cruise! The weather did not cooperate this time, it rained all day everyday up until Memorial Day Monday. We had to pivot some, cut out 1 beach day, but all in all we spent the weekend together and it was perfect.

Here's our initial itinerary. I still think it would work great if the rain stays away. Feel free to borrow:

The first day was just Alanah and Josh. The trip started out with a stop at Bowen's Island Restaurant for fresh seafood. It's a local's favorite spot with marsh views, fresh oysters, and pitcher's a beer. We sat on the covered patio while a rain storm came through and loaded up on shrimp and hush puppies.

We ended the day with a meal at Husk. I took no pictures but the food was 10/10 fantastic. Highly recommend, it is worth the hype. We had dirty martinis and espresso martinis for dessert. Perhaps the best martinis in the city. The next day we were joined by Celine and Travis. Our initial plan was for a beach day, but with another day of rain we had to switch it up. We changed plans to some rainy day activities in Avondale. The girls went to a rose tasting at Avondale Wine and Cheese, while the boys went to local bars like Gene's. Then we braved the rain to make a few stops on King Street.

Our evening plans started off with a dinner at Sorelle, a new Italian restaurant in town. The food was fantastic yet again. Many dishes were family style. The pastas were a favorite for everyone. I was impressed with the wine list and the lemon dessert.

After dinner things got interesting. Our haunted pub crawl was quite the adventure. We were ill prepared, as the rain was supposed to move through however it continued to pour. We didn't let that spoil our fun. The tour stopped at Henry's in the french quarter, The Blind Tiger on Broad street, and ended at the Griffon, a pirate bar! We had a most special stop at a local souvenir shop where we were able to pick up some ponchos. We captured orbs on film, had our aura's read, and bought crystals from a pirate. All in all, great memories were made. I would absolutely recommend if you need an group activity and the weather cooperates.

The next morning after we all dried off and got a good night's sleep, we headed to Sunday brunch a the Post House, one of our favorite restaurants. Its located in the old village in Mount Pleasant. We loaded up on lattes, mimosas and breakfast foods before exploring the Pitt Street shopping area and then taking a walk on Pitt Street Bridge.

We had already gone to King Street a few times by now, so we took it easy and rested before the next adventure. It was time for our Tiki Cruise. We had always noticed these little tiki huts out on the bay, and knew they would be so fun. We booked a sunset cruise. The huts fit 6 plus a captain. They are BYOB and food. The launch point is Shem's creek and you can order take out from Water's Edge restaurant, but by this point in the trip we needed some less fancy food. We ended up packing a cooler and ordering some Jimmy John's and we were happy as clams. Our original plans were to dress up to a college style "White Trash Bash" theme, but due to the cold temps, clouds and rain we just went warm and comfortable instead. There was no sunset on our cruise, but there were SO MANY DOLPHINS! After the cruise we wandered over to Muddy's for a night cap, our favorite place to grab a quick drink on Shem.

We had made it to memorial day. We started the day with a brunch at Sullivan's Fish Camp before we walked out to the beach on Sullivan's Island. Lobster rolls and the Pool Boy cocktail were delicious and refreshing. The sun finally came out and we had perfect beach weather. We didn't end up staying for a picnic, we all were ready for some Barbecue so we made a stop at HomeTeam to end out the beach day.

We finished out the weekend with breakfast at Miller's All Day, then between airport runs we got in a walk at Hampton Park and a quick bite to eat at Leon's. I'm still recovering from this much food and fun. Can't wait to do it all again next time!

XOXO,

Caro
